In a Twist

Is sourdough starter considered a liquid by the TSA?

Shortly after dad and I spotted the King Arthur recipe for sourdough pretzels and determined that their construction would make for an excellent project during my annual visit home, it occurred to me that flying with all manner of baking supplies and my own homegrown starter might not be kosher. So dad went to work assembling the necessary ingredients and yesterday we cracked out a batch of these lovelies.

Though neither one of us had ever spent any time on the line at Auntie Anne’s, we managed to twist them into passable replicas. And once we actually exercised some snacking patience and let them cool off a bit (ahem) they proved tasty as well–especially with a dab of the chipotle mayo mom was saving for sandwiches.

Molly, they look yummy! Did you save some for your Mom?

I think she skipped the pretzel snacks in favor of some of the roasted rhubarb I made for her.

Did this batch of rhubarb have that, um, herbaceous smell?

With no cardamon to be found in the spice cupboard (!), I had to make do with a combo of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves. Still tasty, still vaguely…, um, yeah, but not so much….
