Had some inkling what the birthday package Kate sent might be when I saw the size and weight of the box. Shades of cassoulet! I’ve been salivating over one of these babies for awhile. Thinking of breaking it in with a late summer favorite, Eggplant and Lentil Stew with Pomegranate Molasses. This Turkish recipe calls for what seems like an insane amount of olive oil, but the stovetop cooking melts the eggplant into it and melds all the flavors.
Meanwhile, I’ve been practicing my scales on the Teacarina cups from Molly. (It’s a teacup, and an ocarina!) Nestle the cup in your hand, place your fingers over those little holes in the sides and blow into the mouthpiece set in the rim. The cups come with a fingering chart and instructions for playing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Ingeniously, it works (when the cup is emptied and with a little experimentation with force of air and angle). How’d they figure that out?
